Discovering History Through the Students' Own Eyes

The narrator is Anna, a teacher at Municipal School A who ran the “In the Footsteps of the Cairo Geniza” project with a fellow teacher at the school, for 7th-grade students. 

An engaging project took place at Municipal School A: " In the Footsteps of the Cairo Geniza", an analysis of ancient manuscripts, in the 7th grade. The project, designed to bring students closer to historical research, included presentations and games, but for Anna, one of the teachers who led the process, the most significant moment came precisely when the academic material became a real-life experience. At an advanced stage of the project, Dr. Moshe, a history researcher, visited the school and introduced the students to the principles of transcribing historical sources using artificial intelligence. He divided the class into groups, and each group was given a historical source to decipher. The students compared their own understanding with the results provided by the artificial intelligence, and immediately noticed that in many cases the AI was wrong, and they themselves were able to correct it. This moment was particularly significant. Until then, the students had mainly been exposed to presentations and games, but once they experienced hands-on work with real historical materials, they connected with the project in a much deeper way. The independent deciphering and analysis not only captivated them but also made them realize they could actively contribute to the research process. From this experience, Anna reached an important insight: to make learning truly meaningful, more moments of hands-on experience must be incorporated. She believes that projects of this kind would be better suited for older age groups, such as 8th or 9th graders, who have already studied historical sources and the work of historians. Thus, the students would come better prepared and be able to delve even deeper into historical inquiry. The project had a profound impact, not only on the students but also on Anna herself. She came away from the process with a clear insight: true history education happens when students not only learn about history, but also experience it for themselves.
