Doing Science Communication — Saving the Irises Through the Media

Students discovered that the irises they were researching were about to be damaged due to the expansion of an industrial area. They took it upon themselves to fight the decision. They made signs to raise awareness about protecting the irises, wrote a petition to have the site declared a nature reserve, opened a Facebook page on the issue, and sent letters to the relevant authorities. To their great delight, they succeeded, and were able to take part in an activity to relocate the irises to an area adjacent to the school, under the guidance and supervision of researcher Dr. Yuval Sapir from Tel Aviv University. In addition, at the conclusion of the research project, the students presented their research and their work at a closing evening for parents and community members.
